Top Canadian Scholars Unite on Religion and Ecology Issues

Academics launch new forum to advance public debate

(Kingston, Ontario, Canada) Five university scholars in Ontario and Nova Scotia will launch the Canadian Forum on Religion and Ecology (CFORE) to promote better understanding of how religions shape Canada’s environmental attitudes and behaviours, and how religions can help in resisting further ecological ruin.

Dr. Heather Eaton, Saint Paul University, Ottawa, Dr. James Miller, Queen’s University, Kingston, Dr. Stephen Scharper, University of Toronto, Dr. Peter Timmerman, York University, and Dr. Anne-Marie Dalton, Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, will announce the mission of CFORE and upcoming activities across Canada at the organization’s inaugural lecture at the University of Toronto yesterday. The lecture on Buddhism, Nature, and the Ecological Self, will be given by Professor Kenneth Kraft, a renowned scholar and practitioner of Zen Buddhism, and one of the world’s leading experts on Buddhism and ecology.

The state of the environment is one of the leading ethical questions to be addressed by the world’s religions in the 21st century. CFORE aims to work with the media to advance a broad public understanding of this topic and would be happy to make scholars available to journalists. If you would like a briefing opportunity with one of our scholars, please contact James Miller (see below).

You are also invited to attend the CFORE launch and reception.
